Ceramic Experience, Constructing:
Designed hybrid construction practices: wheel throwing, deconstructing wheel thrown vessels, and handbuilding sculptures with the deconstructed clay pieces
Altered clay using wire tools, carving tools, water, texture applicants, chiseling, etc to achieve various deconstructed textures/effects
Experimented with casting methods to create small, repeatable bodies
Utilized plaster blocks to facilitate detailed glaze transfers
Printed and applied glaze transfers with ceramic transfer paper
Threw clay using fully electric wheels, kick wheels, and motorized kick wheels
Built large functional vessels using up to three separately thrown and combined bodies
Crafted textures and vessel appendages using slab rolling machines and extruders
Ceramic Experience, Firing:
Loaded, programmed, fired, and unloaded a range of personal as well as class work in electric kilns varying in size from test kilns to kilns with a loading capacity of 18.5 cubic ft
Loaded, programmed, fired, and unloaded small gas kilns, medium gas kilns, and car kilns that operated on gas
Loaded, fired, unloaded, downfired, and monitored multiple wood firings in a small train style wood kiln as well as a large catenary arch styled wood kiln
Loaded, fired, and unloaded industrial trash bin pit firings
Loaded, fired, and unloaded raku pieces and demoed texturing the finished work with organic matter including anything from hair to newspaper
Loaded, fired, unloaded and engaged in the soda firing process including making/adding soda ash/calcium carbonate blends to the kiln incrementally
Ceramic Experience, Developing Glazes & Clay Bodies:
Learned and implemented knowledge related to alkali metals, earth alkali metals, silica to alumina ratios, stabilizers, colorants, UMF chart analysis, etc - in order to construct glazes for desired finishes (special effects, matte, transparent, opaque, glossy, satin, and others)
Learned and implemented knowledge related to particle size, purity, material substitutions, stains, colored clay bodies, material sourcing, cost, plasticity, malleability, in addition to other information - in order to create clay bodies that achieved specific looks or that were experimental for particular purposes (throwing, handbuilding, translucency, and others)
Studied and applied glazes to earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain
Aided in testing and developing the new cone 6 studio glazes for the University of Iowa
Aided in testing and developing the new cone 6 studio glazes at my long term residency
Manipulated and constructed cone 04, cone 6, and cone 10 glazes. Generally adjusting primary/secondary flux to stabilizer ratios for desired finishes
Created experimental clay bodies at cone 04, cone 6, and cone 10 for the purpose of testing and understanding vitrification
Ceramic Experience, Studio Monitoring/Peer Mentoring:
Provided routine maintenance and cleaning on electric wheels, kick wheels, slab roller, extruder, mixing machines, tables, hand held tools, and more
Made clay bodies for the ceramics department ranging from stoneware to porcelain
Oversaw and aided students with all types of kiln firings listed on the previous page
Cleaned and maintained the interior of kilns, kiln shelves, and spaces surrounding kilns
Demonstrated throwing techniques to Ceramics II classes: centering, coning, pulling, trimming
Guided basic glazing application practices with students in the Ceramics II classes which included dip applications, painterly applications, and spray booth applications
Brewed excellent coffee for students in order to test their fired mugs
Ceramic Experience, Iowa Ceramics Center Residency Program (year long in length)
Organized and implemented daily tasks surrounding studio upkeep, workshop scheduling, gallery usage, sales, demonstrations, and more
Routinely tested and created large batches of cone 04, cone 6, and cone10 glazes for the studio
Repaired, built, and/or consulted on electric kilns, raku kilns, woodfire kilns, as well as gas kilns
Managed a tight firing schedule for a community of 30 plus members
Taught an array of wheel throwing techniques in both beginner and advanced classes
Processed clay on a daily basis using dry mix, reclaim, a pugmill, and other tools as needed
Led artist talks with the community as well as received artist talks from visiting artists
Assisted in the meticulous material ordering, stocking, and distributing process for the studio
Acted as a demonstrating artist on several occasions for events hosted by the studio
Collaborated with fellow resident artists regarding work, space usage, and communal responsibilities
Collectively worked with other resident artists, the fulltime studio director, and the resident artist supervisor to put on a whole spectrum of events from one off classes, to annual holiday sales, weekly demos, farmers market pop ups, local gallery exhibits, team bonding activities, and more
